Art/Therapy

I hope you enjoyed the process of coloring the printed mandala designs in class today. Mandalas are important to a variety of cultures, faiths and schools of thought...

You can create some interesting mandalas at this site.  If you click on the asterisks, there is more information about the different elements.

Leave a brief but thoughtful COMMENT (100-200 words) on this post answering one or more of these questions:
  • How or why do you think art could be used as therapy?
  • Can you think of other pieces of or types of art that are connected to certain faiths, disciplines or movements?
  • What role does art play in your own life?
  • If you could be any kind of artist, what would you be?  Why?
  • What do your doodles say about your personality?  Check this site or others for reference.
  • Why do you think Adult Coloring Books are so popular right now?  This article has some ideas.
Read everyone else's comments, too, and reply back if you'd like!

  1. I researched what my doodling tendencies said about my personality. I'm an awful artist, so I am not a person who doodles very often. The closest I get to doodling is when I fill in the corners of my paper with my pencil. I start by drawing a straight line across the right angle of a corner of a sheet of paper, and then I fill in the rest of the corner, creating a triangle. The link in the original post told me that this is a sign that I am an analytical thinker. I would agree with that. Rather than creatively thinking, I am a person who likes to stick to the basics.

  3. I think that art can be used as a method for therapy because it makes you think. Personally I see therapy as training your mind to be able to let go and find those beacons in the darkness that is our subconscious. Art allows for you to focus on the colors and the strokes and the endless measure of expression embedded on those pages. I am not an artist myself but coloring alone allows for me to take a step away from everything else and invest in something beautiful.

  4. I think art could be used as therapy because sometimes just the strokes and using the colors to bring something plain to life and creating something beautiful can be therapeutic. And there's so many different methods to use for these. You can be as proper and perfect in the coloring method you want, though that could be a bit stressful, or just let go and color that rabbit purple. And you don't have to stick to just one type of coloring method either. There's so many different utensils, like colored pencils, crayons, markers, paint, charcoal. Coloring also takes away the stress of drawing the piece of artwork too. I don't know about some people, but I'm not the best at drawing, but I pride myself in being pretty decent at coloring.

  6. I think art can be used as therapy for many reasons. Whenever you're more in touch with your creative side it can give you a feeling of accomplishment. This feeling can always make you feel better. Also it can take your mind off of things as well. It can also channel any emotions that you're having into your work of art.

  7. I have experienced first hand how art can be used as therapy. When I am most stressed out or dealing with depression, I can direct my attention to art. I like to do ink drawings and watercolor and I also see music and writing as art. It calms me and I can spend hours on a piece of art when I get in my creative mode. Art is a huge part of my life and always will be. I see art everywhere and it is what gives me fuel.

I would love to study street art and even try it out myself. The infamous street artists, Banksy, has peaked my interest in the art form. His art is always on the line of funny and offensive which I think gives it a strong message.

  8. When my friends sister came home from a long year in Africa, she colored a lot. It seemed like every time I came over to her house her sister was sitting there coloring, which is not a normal thing for her to do. I think she just found comfort in something simple that would detract her from her depression.

For me I found out that my doodles are mostly patterns and that it shows an extreme introverts.

  10. Art is the house that I live in. Everything about it helps me understand specific things about myself or the world around me. It's been something that I allow myself to explore without second thought or worry of opinion from others. When I make something, it's a piece of me (more or less, whether I like it or not) being put out into the world. Part of me wants everyone to understand everything about me just by looking at what I made, but more importantly, I want the viewer to ask questions about themselves when they see it. When I look at a piece of art, I feel more parts of myself come together even if I don't like it. It's just another piece of someone else becoming a part of my memory.

  11. Art is definitely a significant and important part of my life. In fact, it is probably the only thing I am good at. I want to have a career in art and honestly I don't know what I would do, or who I would be without it. Art is no doubt a form of therapy for me. Drawing and sketching is very relaxing to me, though I know that this is not the same for everyone.

  12. The way I would see art as a therapy is distraction. There have been phases in my life in which I'd get really into drawing (and sometimes painting). There would be times that I couldn't seem to NOT draw. Half of every class would be working and actually paying attention, while the other half I spent doodling or very focused on a more complex piece. I believe that I subconsciously used this as distraction from the stress in my life. I've used other forms of distraction, but this is probably one of the only habits that was beneficial because as much as I worked on and studied drawing, I got pretty good at it!
The website that explained my doodling habits seemed to be pretty accurate for me! One of my main doodles is a good-looking face which indicated that I try to see the good in people. When it explained types of flower drawing, I found out that my flower with a circle in the middle and pointed petals means that I have a good heart that I hide under a defensive exterior. And the fact that my flowers droop over rather than stand upright indicates that I am a natural worrier.

  13. I think art is involved in everybody's life in some way. In my life, I am an observer and I very much appreciate art. I enjoy looking at an artist's work and trying to interpret what feeling they were trying to convey in the piece. drawings and paintings are not the only art I admire. I also like the art of film, photography, and music. I respect anyone and everyone involved in the making of films because it takes a lot to make an audience feel exactly what was trying to be put into the film. Photography is also very beautiful, I love it when a photographer can capture a moment that makes the audience feel something. The same thing goes for music. When I write a song I want it to make an audience feel something.

  14. i think art is an important therapeutic activity for myself specifically. i am a very fidgety person, and always need to be doing something. when i have nothing else to do, i pick up a pen and draw. not only does this provide entertainment to an otherwise boring time, it calms my anxious mind and helps me focus on one specific task, rather than bouncing from one thing to another. i got into the adult coloring book kick and i really do find coloring different patterns in to be a satisfying way to pass time and help myself unwind.

  15. I looked at what my doodles say about me. I like to draw stars, arrows, curvy lines, cool patterns, funny-looking people, and flowers. Apparently this means that I am optimistic, ambitious, introverted, obsessive, distrustful, romantic, and warm-hearted. I'm not sure I agree with everything. For example, I don't draw ugly faces because I'm distrustful, I draw funny faces to amuse myself with their funny-ness.

  16. I tend to doodle faces or cubes/random shapes. I don't really pay attention to the expression until the very end, though. A lot of times my faces end up with blank expressions, which I'm trying to improve.

I think art and music can totally be a good kind of therapy. Whether it's to relax or vent, it's useful.

  17. Art could be used as therapy because when you sit down and actually think about what you want to do, like what color you want this car to be or what size rims you want to put on it. All that takes your mind off all the problems you have at the moment. It may not solve the problem but it will make it seem smaller than it is. It could help you forget about the issues you have at home or school or the issues with yourself. So I do think art could be used as therapy it beats any type of drug any day.

  19. I took the quiz about what our drawings or doodles are supposed to mean and what they say about us. I looked at the faces, intricate patterns, and names or initials because that what I draw the most. The faces said that depends on the way that the face is drawn because different faces mean different emotions. The pretty, well-drawn faces are the ones that I draw and it said that I see the good in people. The intricate lines patterns means that I love nature and that I won't let go of my ambitions or loves ones. The last thing that I looked at and the one that I was really surprised with was the names because it said that if you draw your name a lot it means that you like to be center of attention and that couldn't be farther from the truth.

  20. I looked up what my doodling tendencies say about me. I don't normally doodle, but when I do it's a checker board or a cartoon face. The website provided suggests that I see the good in people and that I tend to have mood swings. I think the mood swing part is true in everyone when they havn't eaten in a while, because "Hangry" is real. ha
